People ask us this almost every week: what’s the best time to kitesurf in Essaouira?
The honest answer is that there isn’t a bad month — but the months are genuinely different, and the right one depends on whether you’re learning, progressing, or coming for waves. Here’s how the year actually works, from people who are on this water all of it.
The best time to kitesurf in Essaouira, in short
- Learning to kitesurf: April to June, or September and October
- Strong wind and long sessions: July and August
- Waves, swell and empty beaches: November to March
- Warmest water and quietest water: September
Spring — April, May, June
April is one of the best months of the year here. The forecast is reliable, the water turns properly blue, and the waves are small. The wind sits between 10 and 25 knots — strong enough to ride, gentle enough that it isn’t intimidating. If you’ve never flown a kite before, this is the month we’d point you to. It’s also holiday season, so Essaouira is lively.
May keeps going. You’ll get wind on around 75% of days. It’s slightly more relaxed than April — a little less pressure on the beach, the town a bit calmer — but the conditions are still there.
June is similar, with one thing worth planning around: the Gnaoua World Music Festival, usually in the second half of the month. The town fills up, the music runs all night, and accommodation books up well in advance. The water, oddly, doesn’t get much busier. If you want to combine kitesurfing with one of the best music festivals in Morocco, this is your week — but book your room early.
Summer — July and August
This is the windiest part of the year. Expect 15 to 35 knots, consistently.
If you’re an experienced rider who wants long sessions and power, these are your months. If you’re a complete beginner, it can be a lot — learning in 30 knots isn’t fun for anyone. We still teach beginners in summer, usually in the calmer morning window, but if you have a choice, spring or autumn will give you a better first week.
Autumn — September and October
September is our secret. Locals call it our summer: the European schools have gone back, the crowds thin out, the water is at its warmest, and the wind drops to around 60% of days — still plenty. It’s the month we see the most couples. If you want warm water, space on the beach and no queues, come in September.
October picks back up again. Busier than September, good conditions, and a pleasant time to be in the town.
Winter — November to March
Most people assume Essaouira shuts down in winter. It doesn’t.
You still get wind on around 60% of days, at 10 to 25 knots — and crucially, this is when the swell arrives. For strapless riders on a surfboard, this is the best time of the year. Real waves, real wind, and almost nobody else on the water.
And on the days without wind, there’s surf. We have a lot of spots around Essaouira, and in winter you can usually find one working.
So winter isn’t the off-season — it’s a different trip. If you’re an experienced rider who’s bored of flat summer conditions, or you want to learn strapless, this is when to come.
What wetsuit do I need?
Simple, and this surprises people:
- April to September: a 3/2 full suit
- October to March: a 4/3
Personally, I wear a 4/3 all year and it works fine.
You don’t need boots. The bottom here is sand — no rocks, no reef. That’s one of the reasons Essaouira is such a forgiving place to learn.
So which month is yours?
Never kitesurfed before? April, May, or September. Moderate wind, warm enough water, and you won’t be fighting the conditions while you’re learning the basics.
Can ride but not upwind yet? Same months, and take semi-private lessons — you’ll progress faster than you think with steady wind and flat water.
Want power and long sessions? July and August.
Strapless, waves, swell? November through March, without question.
Why Essaouira
The bay gives you side-onshore wind and flat water close to shore, with open ocean beyond it. The bottom is sand. The wind blows most of the year. It’s one of the few places where a first-timer and an experienced wave rider can both have a good week in the same spot.
We’ve been teaching on this beach for over fifteen years. If you’re not sure which month suits you, message us and we’ll tell you honestly — including if the answer is “not that week.”
